Vision Quest

Japan : Through the Cultural Maze

Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan, with Doug Beasley, Sonia Katchian. November 718, 2009

Join us on this unique trip to the amazing and contrasting cities of Tokyo and Kyoto, Japan with 2 top instructors that each have their own specialty. Tokyo is one of the worlds most modern cities yet centuries old temples await around the corner from the most futuristic settings. We will photograph both, as Sonia takes us to some her most favorite photo spots. Kyoto, the ancient capital, is where old Japan is still alive. We will wander through through the old streets, visit Japanese gardens, making images in Buddhist Temples and Shinto Shrines that reflect a surreal world of inner calm and peace. Our accomodations will be the perfect resting place to relax, edit or review the dayÕs shoot, gather with the group to share a meal, get feedback on work in progress and prepare for another dayÕs journey.

Starting in Tokyo on November 7th we will gather for our kickoff dinner and orientation night. We will be moving out at full speed the next morning and will continue to explore Tokyo for 5 days until the 12th, when we will take the Shinkansen (bullet train) to Kyoto on the morning of 13th. The 14th and 15th will be spent exploring and photographing the gardens and temples of old Kyoto. We return Tokyo on the 16th, with a ‘sayonara’ party and group slideshow of our adventures on the night of the 17th. Departures from Tokyo on the 18th.

Our instructors for this workshop are Sonia Katchian, an internationally published photojournalist and photo correspondent in Tokyo for many years who is anxious to share her love of Japan and Doug Beasley, a fine art and commercial photographer interested in the spiritual realm of art and photography and whose mother is from Japan and published a photo book “Japan: A Neisei’s First Encounter” of his first trip to Japan, funded by a Jerome Travel Study Grant for artists. He will be there to help each participant go deeper into the image making process and help facilitate making photos that reflect not only the spirit of Japan but who you are and what is important in your image making process as well. Also joining us as translator and guide will be Ms Yoshiko Mizuki, a writer and researcher accustomed to working with foreign journalists. She will accompany us on daily field trips and will be there to help as Doug and Sonia give assignments, critiques, problem solve, inspire and give feedback on your imagery.
