Vision Quest

Zen and the Art of Photography

Toscana Photographic Workshop (TPW), Tuscany, Italy, with Doug Beasley, August 39, 2008

untitled

How do we expand the boundaries of our vision? How do we find the unique in the commonplace? How do we acknowledge a sense of familiarity and connection in the unfamiliar? This workshop provides a unique opportunity to rethink our expectations of what it means to 'see'. We will work on cultivating simplicity and making more powerful photographs, supporting the notion that a photograph is not 'taken' but made. The maker needs only to be aware, open and responsive to the possibilities of the present moment.

This workshop is a challenging invitation to heighten our visual awareness and redefine what is personally suitable subject matter. We will clarify our approach through photographic and visual exercises concerned with both internal and external exploration. Your images will have more depth and be more soulful by being more in touch your inner self and your personal process of image making.

A balance of conversation, meditation, poetry, daily critiques and readings will spark inspiration and help shift perspective. Photographic exercises will be site specific and most afternoons will be spent in the field. Whole group, one on one and small group pairings will create a progressive and dynamic environment.

Toscana Photographic Workshops are based in a 14th century monastery in Tuscany, which will be our home for the week. We will have daily adventures into nearby towns and the beautiful countryside. A digital lab and/or film processing are available for an additional fee.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND : While participants must have a working knowledge of their camera, the creative process of image making will be emphasized over the mechanics of camera use. Both digital and film, in all formats, welcome. Open to all levels of experience but better suited for those looking to expand their creativity and vision.
